The funeral home market has traditionally been a relative stable business. Since the 1970's, however, the business has faced more competitive factors. Low profit margin cremations reflected 4.59% of the market in 1970 versus 40.62% in 2010 with estimates as high as 63.5% by 2025. Increasingly, consumers are opting for home funerals and cremations because of their increased simplicity and decreased cost. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, burial is at least 40% more expensive than cremation.

While aging boomers are now starting to retire in big numbers, they won't become customers until they start dying. The average death ratio is 8.3 deaths per 1,000 people in 2010-2016. This ratio is expected to stay relatively stable all the way until 2040-50 when the ratio climbs to 9.7 to 1,000. Over the next five years to 2025, the industry is anticipated to grow marginally with revenue projected to increase at an annualized rate of only 0.3% to $15.9 billion.
